Chapter Fourteen

They did sleep eventually, on a bed they’d so thoroughly trashed they had to get up and make it before they could sleep in it.

Jarvez woke first in the morning. He’d woken in this very hotel before, usually alone even if he’d shared the bed with a man the night before. But now Alyn lay on the other side of the bed, weighing it down enough to make Jarvez naturally roll toward him. He lay for a while, enjoying the heat and the scent of Alyn. But he had to get up eventually, needing the bathroom. He took a shower and shaved and came back into the bedroom, wearing one of the bathrobes. Alyn was stirring, so Jarvez went and shook his shoulder.

“Mmm? What time is it?” Alyn muttered.

Why did he care? Did he have someplace to be? Jarvez really didn’t want to go anywhere yet. “Almost ten thirty.” A worrying thought struck him. “You’re not on watch today, are you?”

“What? Oh, watch.” Alyn sat up, rubbing his hands over his face. “No, not until this evening.”

Damn. That soon? Jarvez tried not to let the disappointment show. “Okay. I’m done in the bathroom, so why don’t you take a shower and I’ll order some food?”

“Great. Hey.” He grabbed Jarvez’s arm as he moved away and pulled him down to kiss him. His breath tasted stale and his bristles rasped on Jarvez’s skin, but it still made Jarvez want to say “screw that” to breakfast and jump him. Squeeze every last moment of pleasure out of this time they had together. But even as he found himself unconsciously starting to pull on the cord of his bathrobe, Alyn’s stomach gave a loud rumble of complaint. A few tiny pastries and slices of strawberry eaten off Jarvez’s back hours ago was obviously not enough to hold a big guy like him. He smiled against Jarvez’s mouth, then pulled away with a chuckle.

“Yes, better order breakfast. Enough for six people ought to do it.”

By the time Alyn emerged from the bathroom, showered and shaved, the food had arrived and a waiter was laying it all out on a table. Alyn hesitated in the doorway to the living room for a moment, watching the man warily until he had cleared up the debris of the dinner from the night before and turned to Jarvez.

“I’d like the room made up as soon as possible.” Jarvez slipped him a generous tip.

“Yes, sir. Someone will be up directly.”

“Thank you.”

The waiter left, and Jarvez turned to Alyn with a smile. “Well, don’t block the doorway. Come and eat. You’re going to need your strength.” That made Alyn smile. He joined Jarvez at the table.

“Did we get our clothes back yet?”

“They’ll be back soon. Why do you need them?”

“Just as long as I have them back by 1600. That’s when I’ll have to leave.” He poured himself a coffee. Jarvez sighed. But still, it was many hours until 1600. They could cram a lot into those hours.

They ate almost in silence, both ravenous after their exertions of the night before.
